Costa Rica has a long past with the United Fruit Company, an American corporation that traded in tropical fruits (mainly bananas). It has maintained a virtual monopoly in certain regions in Central America, some of which came to be called the Banana Republic. Costa Rica was one of them. The Company acquired strong political & economical power, the activity employed many Costa Ricans, and was almost an integral part of the country’s culture.
