Overview

With the establishment of Manuel Antonio National Park in 1972, the people of Costa Rica decided to preserve for future generations one of the most beautiful and bio-diverse areas in the world. Although it is the country’s smallest national park, the stunning beauty and diversity of wildlife in its 683 hectares is unmatched. Besides, you will have more opportunity to spot wildlife in a shorter time! Manuel Antonio National Park contains a charming combination of rain forest, beaches, and coral reefs. These beaches are the most beautiful in the country, lined with lush forest. The forest is home to 2 and 3 fingered sloths, toucans, iguanas, the rare and adorable squirrel monkeys, millions of colorful little crabs and much more. The trail that winds around Punta Catedral affords some spectacular views. The park is easy to reach, south of the town of Quepos in Puntarenas province, and is near a good selection of hotels and restaurants. In this particular tour, you’ll hike through the rainforest along 1,500 meters of easy-access trails in an estimated time of 2.5 to 3 hours, with an experienced & bilingual naturalist interpreter, certified by the Costa Rican Tourism Board. Your guide, equipped with a high-powered spotting scope, will help you locate the vast variety of flora and fauna in their natural habitat, you can also use their telescope to take pictures of the animals up close. You will have the chance to spot Howler, white-faced, and Titi monkeys, plus Agutis, and, if you are lucky, the beautiful Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus), all while learning about the diet, habits, and many more facts about the variety of species you’ll encounter during this incredible nature adventure. This tour includes all transportation, your admission ticket and a fresh break in the middle with fruits and drinks too, what more could you ask for?

Socio, wildlife & bird expert!

My mother and I booked the tour through the Park. We opted to self-drive but neglected to read the fine print which instructed us to meet the guide at El Avion restaurant. Turns out there is a very good reason to meet at El Avion. If you self-drive-be aware-it is not for the faint of heart. The “gauntlet” of people pretending to be Manuel Park parking lot attendants was staggering. Do yourself a favor-allow yourself to be driven-there is zero benefit to driving. On the positive-we sure lucked out with our guide, Socio. His attitude, enthusiasm and sheer level of knowledge was astounding. He is truly an endemic bird expert with 20 years of experience. We saw sloths, monkeys, sleeping bats, colorful crabs and spiders, hummingbirds, many heliconia varieties and two kinds of snakes. Let me tell you about the snakes. The first was a harmless green snake. The second was a baby fer-de-lance-the deadliest snake in CR. Coiled up it was no more than 2” across but this sighting alone was enough to put me off of a night tour b/c I did not wear proper closed-toed shoes. Note to self-dress appropriately next time. I do not know if it is possible to request a particular guide-but you would be in expert hands if you luck out as we did and have Socio as your park guide. If you are a bird enthusiast, Socio has his own company as well-Endemic Bird Expert-so you know you are in good hands. Thank you, again, Socio. My mother and I loved our day with you.

Cesar was our guide for our tour! It was amazing. He gave us great information about anything we asked and he showed us remarkable things. We would never have found the sloths without his help! Best of all with the use of his scope – we got some amazing pictures!!

George was a wealth of knowledge and 3 minutes walking into the park we already found animals to look at. I know I would have missed everything myself so having a guide was worth every penny. From parking to tickets to snacks, all were taken of. Highly, highly recommended!
